Panthers Sign D.J. Hackett
By Brinson | March 17, 2008
According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, via MDS at FanHouse, the Panthers have reached an agreement with wideout D.J. Hackett. Hackett had visited Cha-town and was rumored to make his decision today. It appears that decision has been made, and quite favorably for us.
The deal he’s getting is two years for 3.5 million bones, which, folks, is an absolute steal. Hackett was poised to break out last year with the departure of Darrell Jackson to San Francisco but spent most of the season injured, leading to Nate Burleson inexplicably becoming relevant again. It was a contract year so that obviously hurt Hackett’s value. But consider that he’s getting paid less than Keary Colbert, that Drew Carter is getting two mil to play one year in Oakland and it’s not hard to see that Fox and Hurney’s patience is quickly paying dividends as we rake the better free agents off the pile at lesser money.
Moose will obviously switch to the number three slot, and Dwayne Jarrett will be given more time to mature while getting his ass to the film room, but in the event of injury, we’ve got some backup options too. Steve Smith suddenly can’t be quintuple teamed and if Jake Delhomme stays healthy, this is going to be a very dangerous offense. Well done, front office folks.

Unfortunately, the status of our offensive line is still in question. With the introduction of the “vaunted zone-blocking scheme”, we were supposed to develop a dominant running game LAST YEAR. If nothing else, it looks like we’re in the process of developing a much more versatile offensive line where guys can play a number of different positions, depending on what sort of injury/suspension issue we may find ourselves in by the beginning of the 2008 season.

Completely agree. The problem is I don’t think our answer lies in tying up a bunch of money in aging free agents. Instead, there are a ton of RB and OL prospects that could fall to our picks this year. But yeah, we still have work to do on the line and the zone blocking thing, which was supposed to bring out the best in a runner like Foster, didn’t exactly work out last year. Didn’t help that Mittens was “calling signals” either.

Mittens was on his back more last year than Britney Spears. ZING!!!
Seriously. Good riddance, Mr. Mittens. I’m pretty sure the Giants only brought Mittens in to make Eli Manning look more masculine. You call him “Mittens”, I call him “Wet Pony”. Still the same result.
