Dan Morgan Retires; Goes Out, Well, Not at the Bottom
By Brinson | May 20, 2008
The Dan Morgan Era, which may be a stretch, ended Tuesday. It would best be defined by four really, really, really hard hitting games a season. Which is a shame, because Morgan was a ridiculous talent, who could simply never stay healthy. Or perhaps, never play a speed that would allow him to stay healthy. The only good news is that the Panthers don’t have to go against him twice this year, since he announced his retirement today.
When we signed Dan, he was committed to making a fresh start, and he was making every effort to rehabilitate the leg injury that he suffered last year,’ said [New Orleans] coach Sean Payton in a statement. ‘But it wasn’t responding as well as he had hoped it would. We wish him well in his continued recovery, and he will be remembered for the excellent player he was during his career.’
This is obviously, for Morgan, the smart choice. He has no business staying on the football field with the number of concussions (five) he has incurred over the course of his career. And because of changes in the way we look at medical conditions today, he probably wouldn’t be able to find many teams that would look past the injuries.
Thanks for the memories, Dan.
