Our Backup Quarterback Could Be … Brett Favre (? - ! - WTF)
By Brinson | July 3, 2008

Yes, you read that correctly. Brett Favre, according to PFT, could possibly, maybe, potentially, if-he-were-to-comeback, want to be a Panther.
We’re now hearing that Cook is privately saying that Favre wants to play for the . . . . drum roll, please . . . oh, wait, it’s in the headline . . . Carolina Panthers.
We don’t know why Favre is eyeing Carolina. Maybe he thinks that it’s the best place for him to step in as the starter, notwithstanding the presence of Jake Delhomme, and have a chance to win. Or maybe Favre wants to play for a time that’s fairly close to his home in Mississippi — and that will play three division road games in that same general area as well.
Beyond the geography and a roster with the talent to compete in a wide-open NFC, Favre has no strong connections to the coaching staff. Favre never has been in the same organization as head coach John Fox.
That said, the quarterbacks coach, Mike McCoy, was on the Packers’ practice squad in 1995.
In the words of FJM, Eff the heck? It’s quite bizarre. Although, this makes sense on some levels. The Panthers are geographically close (as noted above). The Panthers have a lot of talent on this team. We have a strong receiving core, led by the oh-so-studly Steve Smith. We would have been good last year were it not for Jake Delhomme’s injury.
However, Jake is the starter, and that’s the rub, since it’s highly unlikely that Favre wants to go to a team for whom he wouldn’t start. This is Favre we’re talking about and also a straight rumor, so I don’t want to do anything crazy like think he has insider info on Delhomme and is making a play, but if he was willing to come in and back up Jake, I wouldn’t be opposed.
The downside to that, of course, is that people would be freaking the hell out should Jake falter at all, calling for Favre to start. Again, all total and utter speculation, but I think of some of the locations that Favre could be headed, Carolina’s at least feasible.
